He was a womaniser (13 known mistresses) and was involved in a number of scandals including two court cases. He frequently visited France and encouraged close relations with that country resulting in the Entente Cordiale in 1903. He was uncle of the German Kaiser and the relationship between them was not good and in the First World War the Germans claimed that it had been brought about because of Edward's policies.
