Albert Victor Christian Edward Saxe-Coburg and Gotha, Duke of Clarence and Avondale was the son of Edward VII Albert Saxe-Coburg and Gotha, King of the United Kingdom and Alexandra Caroline Marie Charlotte Louise Julia von Schleswig-Holstein-Sonderburg-Glücksburg, Princess of Denmark. He was born on 8 January 1864 at Frogmore House, Windsor, Berkshire, England.1 He and Mary Prinzessin von Teck were engaged on 3 December 1891.2 He died on 14 January 1892 at age 28 at Sandringham, Norfolk, England, from pneumonia.3 He was buried on 20 January 1892 at Windsor, Berkshire, England.4
He was invested as a Knight, Order of the Garter (K.G.) on 3 September 1883.3 He was created 1st Earl of Athlone [U.K.] on 24 May 1890.1,5 He was created Duke of Avondale on 24 May 1890.3 He gained the title of Duke of Clarence and Avondale on 24 May 1890.1 He gained the title of HRH Prince Albert of the United Kingdom.1 Albert Victor Christian Edward Saxe-Coburg and Gotha, Duke of Clarence and Avondale also went by the nick-name of Eddy.
On his death, all of his titles became extinct.5 He has an extensive biographical entry in the Dictionary of National Biography.6
