Leopold George Duncan Albert Saxe-Coburg and Gotha, 1st Duke of Albany was the son of Albert Prinz von Sachsen-Coburg und Gotha and Victoria I Alexandrina Hanover, Queen of the United Kingdom. He was born on 7 April 1853 at Buckingham Palace, St. James's, London, England.2 He was baptised on 28 June 1853 at Buckingham Palace, St. James's, London.2 He married Hélène Frederike Auguste Prinzessin zu Waldeck und Pyrmont, daughter of Georg Viktor Prinz zu Waldeck und Pyrmont and Helene Wilhelmine Henriette Pauline Marianne Prinzessin von Nassau-Weilburg, on 27 April 1882.2 He died on 28 March 1884 at age 30 at Villa Nevada, Cannes, Nice, France, from haemophilia, after a fall where he bumped his knee.1,2 He was buried on 5 April 1884.2
He gained the title of HRH Prince Leopold of Great Britain and Ireland.1 He gained the title of Herzog von Sachsen.2 He was invested as a Knight, Order of the Garter (K.G.) on 24 May 1869.3 He was invested as a Knight, Order of the Thistle (K.T.) on 24 May 1871.2 He matriculated at Christ Church, Oxford University, Oxford, Oxfordshire, England, in 1872.2 He was invested as a Privy Counsellor (P.C.) in 1874.2 He was invested as a Fellow, Society of Arts (F.S.A.) in 1876.2 He graduated from Oxford University, Oxford, Oxfordshire, England, on 30 May 1876 with a Doctor of Civil Laws (D.C.L.).2 He was invested as a Bailiff Grand Cross, Most Venerable Order of the Hospital of St. John of Jerusalem (G.C.St.J.) on 25 January 1877.2 He was invested as a Knight Grand Cross, Order of St. Michael and St. George (G.C.M.G.) on 24 May 1880.2 He was created 1st Earl of Clarence [U.K.] on 24 May 1881.1,2 He was created 1st Duke of Albany [U.K.] on 24 May 1881.2 He was created 1st Baron Arklow [U.K.] on 24 May 1881.2 He gained the rank of honorary Colonel in 1882 in the service of the 3rd Seaforth Highlanders.2 He was suffered from haemophilia.1

Der Coburger Herzog Alfred verstarb 1900, ohne einen männlichen Nachkommen zu hinterlassen. Die Erbfolge fiel nun auf den nächstjüngeren Sohn Alberts, an Arthur, den Herzog von Connaught. Dieser verzichtete jedoch, deshalb war der nächste Sohn, Leopold, Herzog von Albany, an der Reihe. Da dieser aber 1884 im 31. Lebensjahr verstorben war, wurde dessen Sohn, also ein Enkel Alberts und Victorias, erbberechtigt. Es war der noch minderjährige Carl Eduard. Bis zu dessen Volljährigkeit trat der 37jährige Erbprinz Ernst zu Hohelohe-Langenburg die Regentschaft an. Die Regentschaft des Prinzen erlosch im Jahre 1905.
